CAIIB is a certification exam for serious bankers that plays a direct role in increments, strengthens promotion prospects, and builds long-term credibility in the banking system.
Conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF), the Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) exam focuses on advanced banking, finance, risk management, and regulations.
This detailed guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about the CAIIB exam 2026.
What is CAIIB?
CAIIB full form is Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers.
CAIIB is a professional certification for bankers who want career growth, increments, and promotions.
It is considered an advanced-level qualification after JAIIB.
The exam is conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF) as its flagship associate-level course.
CAIIB is widely respected in the Indian banking system because:
- It builds an advanced understanding of banking, finance, risk, and laws
- It is linked with increments and promotion eligibility
- It signals long-term seriousness in a banking career
CAIIB is a career milestone after JAIIB.
What is the Difference Between JAIIB and CAIIB?
- IIBF conducts both CAIIB and JAIIB exams
- CAIIB is an advanced-level certification, and JAIIB is an entry-level certification
- CAIIB requires JAIIB certification and membership in IIBF, whereas JAIIB is open to anyone working in the banking and finance sector who is a member of IIBF
Clearing JAIIB is compulsory before CAIIB.

What is the CAIIB Eligibility 2026?
Only bankers who have cleared JAIIB and hold an active IIBF membership are eligible.
You are eligible if:
- You have cleared the JAIIB exam
- You are employed with a bank or financial institution that is an IIBF member
- Important Topics of ABM
- Important Topics of BFM
- Important Topics of ABFM
- Important Topics of BRBL
What is an IIBF Membership?
IIBF membership is a compulsory registration with the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance to appear for CAIIB.
The CAIIB exam is conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF), and only registered members are allowed to take its flagship examinations, like JAIIB and CAIIB.
Who needs an IIBF membership?
You need IIBF membership if:
- You are a bank employee
- You want to appear for JAIIB or CAIIB
- Your bank or institution is an IIBF member
Both clerks and officers require the same membership process.
Is IIBF membership a One-Time Requirement?
Yes. IIBF membership is usually a one-time registration.
Once enrolled:
- You get a unique membership number
- The same number is used for all future exams
- Membership remains valid as long as it is active
However, membership can become inactive if:
- You resign from the bank
- Membership fees or renewal requirements are not met
- Active membership is mandatory at the time of CAIIB registration
How to get an IIBF membership?
You can obtain the IIBF membership by registering and applying through the steps below:
- Visit the IIBF website and click on Online Membership Registration.
- Read the instructions carefully and keep scanned copies of your photo, signature, and ID proof ready.
- Fill the online application form and upload the required documents.
- Preview the form and proceed to online payment (card or net banking).
- After successful payment, you will receive your IIBF membership number and password via email/SMS.
- If registration fails or remains incomplete, follow the same process again.
What are the CAIIB Attempts & Time Limit?
A candidate gets 5 attempts to clear CAIIB within a maximum time limit of 3 years.
This means CAIIB is not an unlimited-attempt exam. Both attempt count and time duration matter.
How many Attempts are Allowed for CAIIB?
You are allowed a maximum of 5 attempts to clear CAIIB.
- These 5 attempts need not be consecutive
- You can skip an exam cycle without losing attempts
- Each registration counts as one attempt, even if you appear for only one paper
- Once the 5 attempts are exhausted, you cannot continue under the same registration.
What is the Time Limit to Clear CAIIB?
The total time limit to clear CAIIB is 3 years from the date of first registration.
- The 3-year clock starts from your first CAIIB registration
- Not from the exam date
- Not from the result date
Whichever comes earlier will apply:
- Completion of 5 attempts
- Completion of 3 years
If either limit is crossed, the CAIIB attempt cycle ends.
Are CAIIB Marks Carried Forward for Passed Papers?
Yes. Marks for cleared papers are carried forward within the validity period.
This means:
- If you clear one or more papers in an attempt
- You do not need to reappear for those papers
- Credits remain valid only till the 3-year time limit
This system allows candidates to clear CAIIB in parts instead of all papers together.
What happens if you Fail to Clear CAIIB within 5 Attempts or 3 Years?
You must make a fresh registration for CAIIB.
In such cases:
- All earlier passed paper credits are cancelled
- You must start CAIIB again from scratch
- Attempt count resets, but previous marks do not carry forward
This is why planning attempts smartly is important.
Do you Need to Apply Again for the Second or Subsequent CAIIB Attempts?
Yes. You must apply separately for each CAIIB attempt.
- Registration is required for every exam cycle
- Fee depends on the attempt number
- You can choose only the remaining papers while applying
- Even if you are appearing for a single paper, registration is mandatory
Is there any Minimum or Maximum Gap Required Between JAIIB and CAIIB?
There is no mandatory gap between JAIIB and CAIIB.
Once you clear JAIIB and maintain an active IIBF membership, you are eligible to apply for CAIIB immediately in the next available cycle.
