How to Prepare for UPSC EPFO Personal Assistant Exam?

The UPSC EPFO PA exam has two stages: Recruitment Test (RT) and Skill Test. The RT is where most candidates are eliminated. The Skill Test is qualifying in nature, but you still need to clear it.

Here is how to approach both.

Stage 1: Recruitment Test

The RT has four sections: English Language, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning & Computer Aptitude

Total duration is 2 hours.

All questions carry equal marks, and there is a 1/3rd negative marking.

English Language

  • RC passages, error spotting, para jumbles, fill-in-the-blanks, and vocabulary are the most common question types.
  • Read one editorial from The Hindu or The Indian Express daily. This builds both comprehension speed and vocabulary simultaneously.
  • Do not mug up word lists blindly. Learn words in context. It sticks better.
  • Practice error spotting daily. 15 questions every morning is enough.

General Awareness

  • This section covers current affairs, polity, economy, history, geography, and static GK.
  • For current affairs, focus on the last 6 months. Read a monthly current affairs digest rather than daily news. It saves time and covers everything.
  • For static GK, cover NCERT basics for Polity (Class 9-11), Economy (Class 9-11), and Geography (Class 9-10). These are enough.
  • Create a short notes document for important facts, including commissions, committees, schemes, and constitutional articles. Revise it weekly.

Quantitative Aptitude

  • Simplification, percentage, ratio, profit-loss, time-work, and DI are the most important topics.
  • Start with simplification and percentage. These two alone can give you 4-5 questions.
  • For DI, practice tables and bar graphs daily. Do not waste time on complex caselets at this stage.
  • Speed is everything in Quant. Practice mental calculations daily, even 10 minutes makes a difference over 3 months.

Reasoning and Computer Aptitude

  • Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, coding-decoding, and basic computer questions are the core areas.
  • Computer Aptitude questions are basic, covering topics such as MS Office, the internet, and hardware/software fundamentals. One good computer awareness book covers everything you need.
  • For Reasoning, puzzles, and seating arrangements take the most time. Practice these under timed conditions from day one.

Stage 2: Skill Test

The Skill Test is mandatory and qualifying in nature. It tests your stenography speed and transcription accuracy.

  • Dictation is given at 120 words per minute for 10 minutes.
  • Transcription must be done on a computer. 50 minutes for English, 65 minutes for Hindi.

Here is how to prepare this stage:

  • Practice stenography shorthand daily without fail. Consistency matters more than long sessions.
  • Build your transcription speed on a computer. Do not practice on paper and expect results on screen.
  • Practice with audio dictations at 120 wpm. If you cannot find material, use YouTube channels that offer speed dictation practice.
  • Time yourself strictly. 50 minutes for English transcription is tight if your typing speed is below 40 wpm. Work on typing speed alongside shorthand.

General Tips

  • Attempt at least 10 to 15 full-length mock tests before the RT. Start mocks only after you have covered the basics.
  • Analyse every mock seriously. Track which sections are costing you the most marks and fix those first.
  • Do not ignore negative marking. In a 300-mark paper, wrong attempts can drop your score significantly. Attempt only when you are reasonably confident.
  • Revision is more important than covering new topics in the last 2 weeks. Stick to what you know and sharpen it.

Final Note

The UPSC EPFO Personal Assistant exam does not come around every year. Gaps of two to three years between cycles are common. When the notification drops, the window to apply is short, usually just 3 weeks.

Most candidates start preparing only after the UPSC EPFO PA notification. That is already too late.

The written exam is doable. The skill test trips up people who ignore it. 120 words per minute dictation with 50 minutes to transcribe on a computer is not something you build in a week.

Use the time you have now. When the UPSC EPFO Personal Assistant notification 2026 drops, you want to be ready, not starting.
