In Tier 1, you can eliminate options and guess strategically. In the IB ACIO Tier 2 pattern, you have to write. There are no options to fall back on.

The Interview is conducted by Ministry of Home Affairs and carries 100 marks. This is the same as Tier 1. A poor interview score can pull down your final rank even with strong Tier 1 and Tier 2 performance.

What is the Final Selection Process?

• Tier 1 shortlists candidates for Tier 2 at 10 times the number of vacancies.
• Tier 2 + Tier 1 combined shortlists candidates for Interview at 5 times the number of vacancies.
• You must score at least 17/50 in Tier 2 to be considered for an interview.

In case of a tie in final scores, it is resolved in this order: Interview marks, then Tier 2 marks, then Tier 1 normalized marks, then date of birth (older candidate ranked higher), then alphabetical order of names.

What Happens After the Interview in IB ACIO?

Clearing the interview does not mean you get the appointment letter. Two more stages follow, and both are mandatory.

Stage 1: Attestation Form and Special Security Questionnaire

At the interview call letter stage itself, IB asks shortlisted candidates to download and fill out two forms:

• Attestation Form (AF): Covers personal details, family background, educational history, employment history, and addresses of all places lived.
• Special Security Questionnaire (SSQ): A more detailed form specific to intelligence agencies. Covers foreign contacts, foreign visits by self and close relatives, financial details, and any associations that may be relevant to security clearance.

Both forms must be submitted on the day of the interview. IB uses the information in these forms to initiate the Character and Antecedent (C&A) verification.

Stage 2: Character and Antecedent Verification

This is a background check conducted by IB after the interview. It is confidential. What is checked:

• Criminal record (if any) at the local police level
• Verification of addresses, educational institutions, and employment history mentioned in the AF and SSQ
• Verification of character through discreet local enquiries. IB field officers may visit your neighbourhood, speak to neighbours, and verify the information you have submitted
• Financial probity check

This process can take weeks to months. Candidates are not informed when the verification is happening or who is being contacted. Any adverse report, or any mismatch between what you submitted in the forms and what is found on the ground, can lead to disqualification even at this stage.

Stage 3: Medical Examination

After C&A verification, a medical examination is conducted. The medical check covers general fitness for field duties.

Is the IB ACIO Tier 1 Conducted in Multiple Shifts?

Yes. The IB ACIO 2025 Tier 1 exam was conducted in 9 shifts across September 16, 17, and 18, with 3 shifts per day.

Shift 1 runs from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, Shift 2 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, and Shift 3 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Since different candidates get different papers across shifts, IB applies normalization to Tier 1 scores before shortlisting for Tier 2.

Your raw score is adjusted to account for difficulty differences between shifts.

Your shift is mentioned on your admit card. You cannot choose or change it.

Can the IB ACIO Exam Pattern Change in 2026?

Yes, it can. Comparing the 2023 recruitment cycle and the 2025 recruitment cycle, the Tier 1 structure remained the same across both cycles:

• 5 sections (Current Affairs, General Studies, Numerical Aptitude, Reasoning, English)
• 20 questions each, 1 mark each
• 60 minutes, negative marking of 0.25

However, the Tier 2 structure changed noticeably between the two cycles:

The 2023 cycle had a precis writing question instead of the long answer format. The marks split for the essay also changed from 30 to 20.

This means the IB ACIO Tier 2 pattern has changed before and can change again.

IB does not announce the pattern change in advance. The official IB ACIO notification for each cycle mentions the components but not always the exact format.

What does the IB ACIO Pattern Change Mean for Preparation?

Tier 1 has been stable across cycles and is unlikely to change structure.

For Tier 2, focus on building underlying skills, which are essay writing, comprehension, and descriptive writing on current affairs topics.
