Where Does NABARD Grade A Officer Training Take Place?

NABARD Grade A induction training happens at:

National Bank Staff College (NBSC) 

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

NBSC is NABARD’s dedicated training institution for its own officers. Its official mandate is to impart training and continuing education to NABARD staff. This is where every new Grade A officer batch goes for induction.

NABARD also runs the Bankers Institutes of Rural Development (BIRD) at three locations:

  • Lucknow
  • Kolkata
  • Mangaluru

BIRD primarily trains staff from NABARD’s client institutions: rural banks, cooperative banks, and regional rural banks. 

During your career at NABARD, you may also attend programmes at BIRD centres for specialised training.

What is NBSC Lucknow?

NBSC was set up in 1986 to handle the training needs of NABARD officers. Its job is to build the knowledge and skills of officers at every stage of their career, starting from Day 1 of the induction.

NBSC does two things:

  • Runs residential training programmes at its Lucknow campus (like the induction for new officers)
  • Conducts on-location programmes across India for officers at various career stages

How Long Is the NABARD Grade A Training Period?

The initial induction training at NBSC Lucknow runs for 2 weeks.

This is the structured classroom-based phase at the training centre. After this, you move to your posting, and the 2-year probation begins.

After 2 years, NABARD evaluates your performance before confirming you as a permanent officer. 

If performance is not satisfactory, probation can be extended by one additional year.

What Is the NABARD Grade A Salary During Training?

One of the most common questions before joining: Do you get a stipend or a full salary during NABARD Grade A training?

The answer is that you get full salary from Day 1.

What is the Typical Daily Schedule During NABARD Grade A Training?

The training at NBSC follows a structured daily routine. 

Leisure activities such as sports, yoga, meals, and free time are all part of the schedule and included in the NABARD Grade A officer training experience.

The classes are module-wise. Trainees are taught NABARD’s functioning in organised modules covering different aspects of NABARD’s structure, operations, and an officer’s role within it.

Is the NABARD Grade A Training Hectic?

Not particularly. The days are organised with lectures and module sessions running through working hours. Evenings are yours.

Most officers describe the NABARD Grade A training experience as one of the most comfortable phases of their career. You are in a well-managed campus environment with your batch, before the actual pressures of the job begin.

What Is Taught During NABARD Grade A Officer Training?

The NABARD Grade A training curriculum is built module-wise

The focus is on giving you a working understanding of how NABARD functions and what your role involves.

What Is the Culture Like During NABARD Grade A Training?

The training environment is structured but not stressful.

A few things that define it:

  • Faculty is accessible: Experienced trainers and officials who visit are generally open to questions.
  • Batch bonding: The people you train with become your professional peers across postings and departments for years ahead.
  • Residential setup helps: If you have not lived away from home before, the campus routine and batch environment make the adjustment easier.

The core difference is the nature of the institution. 

NABARD Grade A officers are trained for development banking focused on agriculture, rural credit, and financial inclusion. 

RBI Grade B officers are trained for central banking functions. 

What Mistakes Should You Avoid During NABARD Grade A Training?

  • Oversharing on social media: From day one, people start posting campus photos, batch outings, and whatever happens in sessions. NABARD is not a college. It is a regulatory body. Be careful about what you put online from the start.
  • Constantly comparing with RBI Grade B: A lot of candidates keep measuring everything against the RBI training. Longer duration, bigger campus, Governor’s session. NABARD is a different organisation with a different job. You will miss what is actually good about it if you spend the whole time comparing.
  • Big purchases the moment salary hits: First salary comes in, and people start taking loans and making big commitments. You do not yet know which city you are going to. Not a smart move.
  • Assuming your posting before it is out: “I will get Mumbai,” “home state is confirmed.” These ideas build up during training and hurt later. NABARD decides. You find out when everyone else does.
  • Mentally switching off during HR and admin sessions: Leave rules, transfer policy, service conditions. These sessions seem boring and unimportant. They are not. Nobody sits you down and explains this again once you reach your actual posting.
