1. Never Target the Cut Off Marks
As you can see from the data above, the cut off was 122 marks out of 200 in 2019 and just 54.25 marks in 2023. This is because the 2019 exam was relatively easy while the 2023 exam, with its difficult level, led to a lower cut off. I would suggest that the RBI Grade B exam is unpredictable, so focusing on just scoring the cut off marks would not be a wise choice.
2. Sectional Cut Off Has Never Been Above 50% of the Total Marks
It is not possible to establish a fixed sectional cut off for individual subjects. However, based on the trend of the past six years, I, have concluded that the sectional cut off is never more than 50% of the total marks.
- 2026: 48%
- 2025: 30%
- 2024: 25%
- 2023: 15%
- 2022: 15%
- 2021: 20%
- 2019: 25%
- 2018: 25%
This means that while you will have your strong and weak subjects, your weak subject should never be so weak that you do not score even the sectional cut off marks in that subject.
3. Sectional Cut Offs Can be Misleading
To explain this, I am taking the example of 2022. Achieving 12 marks in GA, 4.5 each in English and Quant and 9 in Reasoning may appear manageable. However, it only sums up to 30 marks. This falls short by more than 50% of the overall cut off of 63.75 marks.
This means that securing the sectional cut off is essential but it’s also important to clear the overall Phase 1 cut off to be able to sit for Phase 2.

1. Clearing Just the Phase 2 Cut Off is Not Enough
As you can see from the data above, the cut off difference between Phase 2 (171.50) and Final Selection (230.75) was 59.25 marks in 2025. This means that candidates with 171.50 marks in the phase 2 exam needed to score at least 59.25 marks in the interview to ensure their selection. This is quite challenging.
What this means is that merely scoring the cut off marks in the phase 2 exam isn’t sufficient, you need to aim for higher marks to ease the pressure at the interview stage.
2. Understand the Difficulty Level
On average, the cut offs are around 65% to 70%. The high cut off marks indicate that the exam difficulty level is moderate. So, if you have conceptual knowledge of Finance, Management, Economics, etc., and prepare well, you can crack the exam.
3. Set a Target Score in Phase 2
Based on our analysis of previous years’ exams and cut offs, here are the minimum marks you should aim for:
- FM: 75+ marks
- ESI: 60-65 marks
- English: 65-70 marks
- Finance and Management
It is the highest-scoring subject where you can target 75+ marks. The Finance subject includes static and current components, but the management part is static only. So, while preparing for Phase 2, Finance and Management should be your priority.
- Economic and Social Issues
The majority of the questions asked in the ESI paper are based on current affairs. The vast scope of current affairs makes it challenging for candidates to secure high marks. So, keep the ESI your second priority after FM.
- Descriptive English
Scoring well in English is dependent on 2 things: understanding the basics of essay writing, precis writing, and reading comprehension, and practicing answer writing. With a lot less effort as compared to ESI and FM, one can score good marks in this subject.
- Don’t Take The Interview Lightly
Instances exist where candidates excelled in Phase 2 but scored poor marks in interview. The interview marks range from as low as 4 marks to as high as 74. So, it is advisable not to take the interview lightly. Dedicate time to mock interviews, seek feedback, and address any areas that may need improvement.
