I know the preparation for the RBI Grade B syllabus can be exhausting. With months of study and endless revisions, the pressure is enormous. If, for some reason, things don’t work out, should you look at NABARD Grade A as plan B?
To answer this, one of the first things you’ll have to do is find the similarities and differences between the RBI Grade B and NABARD Grade A syllabus.
RBI Grade B vs NABARD Grade A Syllabus: What’s the Difference?
The RBI Grade B and NABARD Grade A syllabus have some overlapping areas, but there are also some major differences you can’t ignore.
We’ll understand them phase by phase, but first, let’s look at the exam pattern of NABARD Grade A and how it is different from RBI Grade B:
- 3 subjects, Computer Knowledge, Decision Making, and Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), are not found in RBI Grade B.
- The weightage of Quantitative Aptitude (20), Reasoning Ability (20), English (30), and General Awareness (20) is different than that of RBI Grade B, which is 30, 60, 30, and 80 marks, respectively.
- The NABARD Grade A Phase 1 has 8 subjects divided into merit and non-merit sections; the Phase 1 cut off is calculated based on the marks scored in the merit sections only. No such distinction exists in the RBI Grade B exam.
- There is a separate paper of ARD worth 100 marks in the NABARD Grade A Phase 2 exam.

Should You Prepare for Both RBI Grade B and NABARD Grade A Together?
Here are some important points to keep in mind before making your decision:
- If you’ve already prepared for RBI Grade B, then NABARD Grade A Phase 1 will feel much easier. You just need to practice mock tests for common subjects and put extra effort into ARD.
- Computer Knowledge and Decision-Making hold little importance in the overall scheme of the NABARD Grade A exam. These subjects are easy to understand, require little time to cover, and are part of the non-merit section of the exam.
- Economic & Social Issues (ESI) is almost identical in both exams, so you won’t need to put in extra effort. For NABARD Grade A, just focus on topics like Inflation, Food Security in India, Agriculture Characteristics, and a few others that I have mentioned earlier in the table, and take a few targeted mock tests to strengthen your understanding.
- The real challenge is Agriculture & Rural Development (ARD). This is entirely new for RBI aspirants and those without an agricultural background. If you’re shifting from RBI to NABARD, ARD will require the most attention and structured preparation.
- The Descriptive English paper of NABARD Grade A Phase 2 is almost the same as RBI Grade B, with one extra topic: Letter Writing. If you’ve already practiced essays, précis, and comprehension for RBI Grade B, the extra topic won’t be much of a challenge.
