“I just sat down at Howrah railway station… and just soaked in that moment for five or ten minutes.”
This is what Manish Chandra did right after he saw his name on the final list for RBI Grade B. It’s a story about not giving up, about being smart with your studies, and about finding strength in the quietest places. If you have ever felt lost or worried about your preparation, Manish’s journey will feel like a friend holding your hand and saying, “You can do it too.”
Let’s see how a boy with an engineering degree and a dream for UPSC found his way to one of India’s best jobs.

A Journey from Engineering to a Big Dream
Like many of you, Manish started with a regular job after his engineering. But deep down, he had a bigger dream: UPSC. He soon realized that with his job, he just couldn’t give the time that this big exam needed.
In 2018, he left his job to give his full heart to his preparation. He knew that to get something big, you sometimes have to let go of something good. He took this decision early because he was aware that these exams can take time, and he wanted to give himself a fair chance.
But things were about to change for him.
After preparing for UPSC for a few years, the COVID time came. Everything slowed down, and it gave Manish time to think. He had worked hard, but he was also looking for other good opportunities where his efforts could be used.
He thought about RBI Grade B. Many people call it a ‘Plan B’. But Manish says something very important here.
“I think the best alternative for UPSC is RBI Grade B. It’s not a Plan B because it’s not an easy exam to crack.”
He saw it as the best alternative, a respected path in itself. Have you ever felt stuck on one path? Maybe, like Manish, you can look for other great doors that are open for you.
Now, the best part is that all his hard work for UPSC didn’t go to waste. Let’s see how his old preparation became his superpower.

Why He Shifted From UPSC to RBI Grade B During COVID
The CSAT paper in UPSC, which is getting tougher every year, made his reasoning skills strong. So, when he faced the Reasoning section in RBI Grade B, he already had a good foundation. That hard work from years ago helped him now!
The biggest help came in Phase 2. Because of UPSC, he already knew how to write good answers. He knew the structure: how to start with a good intro, how to build the main body, and how to end with a nice conclusion. He also knew how to use connecting words like ‘similarly’ and ‘moreover’ to make his answers flow smoothly.
Even the syllabus of UPSC General Studies helped him directly in the Economics paper of RBI. Topics like globalization and poverty were already familiar to him. So, he didn’t have to start from zero.
But even with all this help, Manish faced a common fear that many of you might have.

How UPSC Preparation Strengthened His RBI Grade B Concepts
Manish came from an engineering background. He heard people say, “Oh, RBI is for commerce and finance students. It’s not for you.”
Manish gives a very simple solution. He says, “Go and see the syllabus yourself.” When he looked at the syllabus, he realized it’s not asking for deep expert knowledge. It’s designed for general students from any background.
He says the exam wants you to know the basics, maybe a little more, but you don’t need a commerce degree for it. The exam is for everyone. Your hard work matters more than your degree.
So now that he was confident, let’s look at his simple and clever plan for Phase 1.

His RBI Grade B Phase 1 Strategy
Manish was very honest with himself. He knew Quant was not his strongest area. So, what did he do? He played it safe!
“I never made more than 8 – 9 questions, and this year also I got six marks in Quant.”
He cleared the exam with just 6 marks in Quant! This teaches us a big lesson: you don’t have to be a master of everything. He knew his strength was in other areas, and he focused on clearing just the cut-off here.

English & GA Strategy: Scoring High to Balance Weak Areas
He knew that to balance his low score in Quant, he had to do really well in other subjects. For him, English was the most important subject to clear the overall cutoff. He aimed high and scored very well here.
For General Awareness (GA), he studied for at least 6 months. He didn’t waste time making notes because the PDFs from EduTap were already short and simple. He understood that GA questions are now paragraph-based, so deep reading was important.
With Phase 1 cleared, the next challenge was even bigger. Let’s see how he prepared for it.

His RBI Grade B Phase 2 Strategy
Management was his favourite subject. This might sound strange, but his reason is very smart. He loved it because the syllabus was fixed and small. This meant he could revise it again and again without confusion. How many times did he revise it? “Ten to twelve times minimum,” he says.
Because he revised it so many times, he was very confident. He knew this paper would not give him any shocks in the exam.
But studying all day can be tiring. When Manish felt overwhelmed or stuck, he would go to his village in Bihar.
Why? He says, “The village is that place of peace… The outside noise is not there. That helps you in self-introspection.”
Now, for the final step of his journey.
His Preparation For RBI Grade B Interview
Because he had given UPSC interviews before, Manish was not very nervous. But he knew the RBI interview would be different. This is where a mock interview helped him a lot.
“The mock interview is important because you are coming from a UPSC life… but here finance-related things are more important. The mock prepares you for that.”
The mock interview panel at EduTap gave him very specific advice. They told him, “You are an engineer, so you should read about new technology like AI in banking.” And guess what? A similar question was asked in his real interview! This shows that getting the right guidance at the right time is very important.
So, after this long and beautiful journey, what is Manish’s final advice for you?

Manish’s Heartfelt Advice for You
If you are just starting your preparation, Manish wants you to remember these three things. They are simple but very powerful.
- Start Current Affairs From Today: Don’t wait for the exam notification. Start reading a little bit every day. This will build your base slowly and you won’t feel pressured at the end.
- Don’t Take Phase 1 Lightly: Many good students get stuck in Phase 1 because they think Quant and Reasoning are easy. Don’t make that mistake. Give them proper respect and practice.
- Make Management Your Strong Point: For Phase 2, prepare the Management part even before Phase 1. It is a scoring paper that can really boost your final marks.
We are now at the end of Manish’s story, but it’s the beginning of yours.
