Ritam Gangopadhyay’s Background & Early Setbacks
Imagine being a very bright student your whole life. Ritam was just like that. He completed his B.Tech and then M.Tech from the renowned IIT Kharagpur. His dream was big, he went to the USA for his PhD.
Everything seemed perfect, right? But sometimes, life has other plans for us. Due to some family problems, he had to come back to India.
Suddenly, he was standing at a point where he had to decide, “What now?” He thought about his options. Going back to his engineering field in India would take a long time. He wanted to start his career soon. He saw that the SSC exams were very slow back then. So, he made a practical choice: he decided to go for banking exams. For him, it was a sensible step to build his career.
But this new path was not going to be simple. A big challenge was waiting for him right around the corner.

His 1st RBI Grade B Interview Experience
So, Ritam started his banking journey and even got a job in the State Bank of India in 2018. It was a moment of relief. At least he had something to start with! But his heart had a bigger dream, RBI Grade B. He kept preparing.
In 2019, he worked very hard and reached the final stage: the RBI interview! Imagine the hope he must have felt. But something unexpected happened. He got very, very low marks in the interview, just 13 out of 50. It was a huge shock.
This was not just about low marks. It felt like someone was questioning if he was suitable for the job at all. That was a very low point for Ritam. He said the panel’s feedback was something like this: “You have switched your career from engineering to banking, but we don’t see any effort from your side.”
That one sentence could have made anyone give up. But this is where Ritam’s real story of strength begins.

Mindset Shift Towards RBI Grade B Preparation
After that interview, Ritam understood something very important. He realised he was thinking like a student, but the interviewers were looking for a professional. He decided to change himself completely. He decided to show them he was serious about banking.
And what he did next is amazing. For the next 3 years, while doing his bank job, he studied for and cleared so many professional courses.
- JAIIB & CAIIB (These are like expert-level exams for bankers)
- Courses on Central Banking
- Courses on MSME Financing and Credit
- He even cleared Level 1 of CFA!
He did all this not just for a certificate, but to prove to himself and to the world that he truly belonged in the world of finance.
But how did he manage to study so much with a tough job? Let’s find out.

His RBI Grade B Preparation Strategy
Ritam’s job was in a rural branch, 90 kilometres away from his home. This means he had to travel 180 kilometres every single day! He would leave home at 6:30 in the morning and come back at 10 at night.
He made his travel time his study time. He would catch an early morning local train because it was less crowded. This gave him 2 to 4 hours of solid, peaceful study time every day. He wasn’t waiting for time; he was creating it. This teaches us that if we really want something, we can always find a way.
Let’s look at the simple methods he used to study during this time.
His Study Plan for FM, ESI & Revision
Ritam knew he couldn’t study everything, so he studied smart.
- For Finance & Management: He enjoyed these subjects, so they were not a big problem for him. His professional courses also helped a lot.
- For ESI & Government Schemes: He made his own notes. He took a base material from a coaching institute and added points from PIB, Google, and ministry reports. This made his notes complete and easy to revise.
- The Magic Revision Rule (1-2-30): Whatever he studied today, he would revise it once the next day, and then again after one month. This simple trick helped him remember things for a long time.
“If I can revise it twice earlier, it should be okay even if I don’t get time to revise just before the exam.”
Now, with all this hard work, let’s see how he faced the exam hall and the interview room one more time.

How He Managed Descritpive Answer Writing
Ritam shared a very honest fact. He said he didn’t practice writing answers at home. He wrote his first full answer directly in the main exam! But wait, he strongly advises everyone, “Please don’t do what I did!” It worked for him only because his daily bank job involved writing long proposals, so he had good practice with typing and structuring sentences.
For everyone else, he says that practice is the most important thing. So, please start practicing your descriptive answers as early as possible.
Now for the most important part, the interview.
The RBI Grade B Interview That Changed Everything
This time, Ritam walked into the interview room with a new attitude. He wasn’t a nervous student anymore; he was a confident banking professional. Because of all the courses he had done, he could talk about banking topics with deep knowledge. The panel could see the effort he had put in for the last 3 years.
There were still some questions he didn’t know the answer to. This time, he couldn’t answer about 6-7 questions. But did he get nervous? No.
He calmly and confidently said, “Sir, I don’t know about this.” This shows maturity. The interview went really well, and he knew he had done his best.
Finally, the long wait was about to end. The day of the result was here.

The Day the RBI Grade B Result Came
The result came out in the evening, around 6:30 PM. Ritam was on the local train, on his way back home. Someone in a Telegram group messaged, “Result is out!” His phone’s internet was not working. For 15-20 long minutes, he knew his result was out, but he couldn’t check it.
Finally, the PDF opened. He scrolled down to the end of the list where his roll number would be. And there it was. His roll number was on the list. He said he was shaking.
He waited for almost 3 hours to get home. He wanted to tell them this news in person and see the happiness on their faces. When he reached home and told them, his mother and wife started crying. There were tears of pure joy and relief.
“I have not seen my family this happy in my entire life.”
And in that moment, every struggle, every long day of travel, and every bit of hard work felt worth it.
