What is the Background of Tanay Gaurav?

Here’s how Tanay’s journey began, which shaped everything that came next.

Tanay graduated from IIT Kharagpur with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Like many bright students, he first started preparing for the UPSC exam. This early preparation gave him a good foundation, especially in subjects like Economics, which really helped him later.

Being an engineer, subjects like Quant and Reasoning were his friends. He was naturally good at them. But subjects like Finance were completely new and a little scary for him. 

His journey shows us that it doesn’t matter where you come from, engineering, arts, or commerce. What matters is how you use your strengths and work on your weak spots.

But his journey wasn’t smooth. A very big challenge was waiting for him just around the corner.

What Happened In His 1st RBI Grade B Attempt?

In 2023, Tanay gave his 1st attempt at the RBI Grade B exam. He worked hard. He cleared Phase 1. He cleared Phase 2 with a score that was 20 marks higher than the cutoff! He was almost there. He was so sure he would make it.

But then, something unexpected happened. During document verification, it was found that his graduation date was just one week after the deadline mentioned by RBI.

Because of this small reason, he was not allowed to give the interview.

Can you imagine how that must have felt? To do all the hard work, to be so close to your dream, and then to be stopped by a date on a piece of paper. It can feel really, really sad and unfair. 

This is where many people might stop. But this is also where Tanay’s real strength showed.

So how did he find the courage to stand up and try again?

After what happened in 2023, Tanay felt very demotivated. It’s natural, right? But he was not alone. His parents were his biggest source of strength. They told him something very beautiful:

This support changed everything. It took away the fear. Knowing that his family loved him for who he was, not for any exam he cleared, gave him the freedom to prepare with a calm mind. He wasn’t fighting this battle alone; his family was fighting with him.

His RBI Grade B Study Plan

No 12-hour schedules, just a simple 7-8 hours of consistent, focused study every day.

His Strategy For RBI Grade B Phase 1: QRE & General Awareness

Here’s his simple two-part strategy for the first big step.

1. For Quant, Reasoning & English (QRE):

• Tanay knew these were his strong areas. So, instead of studying books, he focused only on mock tests.
• He made a special notebook for his mistakes. After every mock, he would write down what went wrong and why.

2. For General Awareness (GA):

• He decided to cover only the last 5 months of current affairs from one trusted source. No confusion.
• He divided the data into 2 types:
  • For Descriptive Answers: Important data points for topics like health, education etc. He made a separate sheet for this and revised it using Active Recall.
  • For MCQs: Facts and figures he just needed to recognize. For this, he just read them again and again to build a visual memory.

This brings us to his secret weapon: Active Recall. 

What is it? 

It’s simple. After reading a topic, close your notes and try to remember and write down all the points you can. 

This makes your brain work harder and helps you remember things for a long, long time.

His Winning Strategy for RBI Grade B Phase 2: ESI, FM & Descriptive

Now, this is where Tanay’s planning really shines.

1. For ESI (Economic and Social Issues):

His UPSC preparation was a big help here.

• He identified 50 very important topics that could be asked.
• For each topic, he made 2-3 pages of crisp, perfect notes covering everything: introduction, data, challenges, government schemes, and a conclusion.

Guess what? In the real exam, 3 out of 4 descriptive questions came directly from his notes! This is the power of smart work.

2. For Finance and Management (FM):

This was the tough part. Finance was new, and Management was tricky.

• He made a smart choice. He decided to make Management his strength because it was easier for a newcomer. He knew he didn’t have to be a master of everything.
• For Finance, he focused on understanding the basics from YouTube videos and didn’t worry too much about very deep topics. He planned to write more answers from Management in the exam.

3. For Descriptive English:

Tanay was already good at writing, so he didn’t spend much time here. He just watched some YouTube videos for tips and practiced a few mock tests to manage his time.

Now, with all this preparation, it was time to face the final hurdles.

The Final Steps: Exam Day and The RBI Interview

On exam day, the Management paper came with a surprise! There were many case-study-based questions that Tanay had not practiced. 

For a moment, he felt a shock. But he did not panic. He stayed calm, found the easier, conventional questions in the paper, and answered them first to regain his confidence.

For the interview, he had only 2 weeks. Instead of trying to study everything, he focused only on his biodata and reading the newspaper. 

His interview was long, more than 40 minutes! He was asked about everything, from economics to his engineering subjects. 

The chairman, who was also a chemical engineer, asked him very deep technical questions. It was intimidating, but Tanay handled it calmly.

And then came the day of the result. He searched for his roll number, and the PDF didn’t show any result. For a second, his heart sank. Then he realised the PDF was not searchable! When he scrolled down and found his number, the feeling was pure relief.

From the pain of 2023 to the joy of 2024, his journey had come full circle.
