A Boy from Manipur with a Football and a Dream

James is from a beautiful place in Manipur. When he was in school, he was not a “topper” who always came first. He was more interested in playing football! He was a good student, always among the top ten, but his heart was on the field.

But as he grew up, he knew he had to focus more on his studies. He stopped playing football as much and started working harder. He says he was just an average student who decided to work hard. He scored good marks in class 12 and then went to Delhi University for his B.Com.

This is such an important thing to remember. You don’t have to be a born genius to clear big exams. Your hard work is your real superpower.

But then came the big question: what to do next? This is where his journey to RBI started.

Why RBI? The Fear and The Big “Why”

James knew about the RBI exam during his college days. But honestly, he was scared. He saw that very few people get selected, and the exam is very tough. Does this fear sound familiar to you? Sometimes we look at a big goal and feel, “Oh, this is not for me.”

But James had a very strong reason.

“If you look at the organization itself, it’s doing a really wonderful job for this country. This is one of the major factors… I just want to be part of this institution.”

His motivation was not just about getting a good job. It was about being part of something important for India. This big “why” gave him the courage to face his fear. His background in commerce also gave him a little confidence. So, he thought, “Let me give it a try. Maybe I can do it.”

What is your big “why”? Thinking about it can give you so much strength on days when you feel low.

Now, let’s see how James made a smart plan to turn his dream into reality.

James’s Smart Plan: The Secret to Clearing in the First Go

This is where he shows us that a good plan is more important than just studying for hours.

Starting with the End in Mind: Phase 2 First!

Most students start with Phase 1 and worry about Phase 2 later. But James did the opposite. He decided to finish the Phase 2 syllabus before the exam notification came out. He knew that the real marks that count are from Phase 2.

He focused on understanding the main topics of ESI and Finance. He believed that if you understand the concepts well, you don’t have to just memorize everything. This gave him a lot of confidence.

Once the notification was out, he was free to focus completely on Phase 1 without any tension about Phase 2. Isn’t that a clever idea? Maybe you can try this too!

How He Handled Phase 1: Simple and Free!

For Phase 1, James used very simple and easily available resources.

●       For Quant: He watched free videos on Amar Sir’s YouTube channel.

●       For Reasoning: He searched for topics on YouTube and learned from different free videos.

●       For English: He just practiced by giving mock tests.

●       For General Awareness (GA): This is another smart trick! He did not study for Phase 1 GA separately. His preparation for Phase 2 GA (like government schemes and reports) helped him answer most of the questions in Phase 1. He saved so much time!

This shows that you can prepare well even with limited resources if you are smart about it.

“One Good Book is Better Than Ten” – His Source Strategy

James saw many people buying courses from 3-4 different places and getting confused. He decided to keep his sources limited.

“I tried to limit my sources, and yeah, it works for me.”

For his Phase 2 preparation, he trusted EduTap’s material. He studied it well and made his own notes from it. His main goal was to revise one source many times, instead of reading many sources one time. This helped him remember things much better.

This is a big lesson for all of us. Don’t run after everything. Choose good material, trust it, and revise, revise, revise!

But a good plan is only half the story. The real test is on the exam day. Let’s see how he handled the pressure.

The Real Exam Day: Facing the Tough Questions

Here’s how James stayed calm when things got difficult.

When the Paper is Hard for Everyone

The Phase 2 objective paper this year was very difficult. Many students got scared and lost hope. But what did James do?

He says, “If it is difficult for me, it is the same for everyone.” Such a simple but powerful thought! Instead of panicking, he just focused on doing his best with what he knew. He did not waste time worrying.

Remember this when you face a tough paper. Your calm mind is your biggest strength at that moment. Just stay calm and try to find the questions you can solve.

Typing, Time, and Tricks: His Descriptive Paper Strategy

The descriptive paper is not just about knowledge; it’s also about speed and presentation.

James shares some amazing practical tips:

●       Practice Typing Without Looking: He suggests practicing typing so much that your eyes are on the screen, not the keyboard. This helps you spot mistakes quickly and saves time.

●       Think While You Type: He didn’t waste time making a perfect structure on paper first. He started typing the answer and planned the next points in his mind at the same time. This is a great way to save precious minutes.

●       Never Leave a Question: Even if you don’t know the full answer, write whatever you know. Something is always better than nothing.

●       Read the Instructions!: He saw another student struggling because she didn’t read the word limit instruction properly. Always read the instructions carefully before you start.

These small things can make a very big difference in your final score.

After clearing the written exams, the final step was waiting for him. The interview!

The Final Step: Talking to the RBI Panel

This was James’s first-ever formal interview. He was nervous, but he prepared with all his heart.

Getting Ready for His First-Ever Interview

How do you prepare for something you have never done before?

James knew this was the last step, and he had to give it his all. He read books written by former RBI Governors to understand RBI better. He read newspapers daily to stay updated. He also read the interview stories of other students to see what kind of questions are asked and what mistakes to avoid.

Most importantly, he gave 5 mock interviews. This helped him practice speaking and build confidence. Preparation is the best medicine for fear, isn’t it?

In the Interview Room: Honesty and Calmness Won

So what happened inside the interview room?

The interview panel was friendly. They asked him about his name, his state Manipur, and some technical questions about RBI. At one point, they started asking him very tough questions. But James did not get scared. He just stayed calm and tried to answer honestly.

He shares a beautiful lesson: “Try to be honest. If you don’t know, just honestly say, ‘Sir, I do not know.’”

The interviewers are not trying to scare you. They want to see how you think and how you handle pressure. James showed them that he could stay calm and be honest. And that’s what they liked.

Now, let’s see what role EduTap played in his journey.

A Little Help from a Friend: How EduTap Supported Him

James believes that good guidance can make the journey much smoother.

He said that EduTap helped him a lot, especially for Phase 2. The conceptual notes for ESI and Finance helped him build a strong foundation. He used these notes to make his own short notes, which were easy to revise.

The material on government schemes and reports was also very helpful. He felt that everything he needed for Phase 2 was in one place. This saved him from running around and getting confused. Good, organized material can feel like a good friend, right?

His story shows that with the right effort and the right support, you can make your path much easier.

Finally, here is a special message from James, just for you.

James’s Message for You: A Heart-to-Heart Talk

These are his final words of advice for every student who is dreaming big.

“If you are willing to give this exam, first try to understand yourself.”

Think about your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself. Once you decide that you really want to do this, then don’t look back. Here are his simple tips for you:

●       Make the Right Decision: Take your time, think properly, and then decide.

●       Once You Start, Don’t Give Up: There will be hard days. You will feel like quitting. But if your decision was right, stick to it.

●       Be Consistent: It’s not about studying 15 hours one day and 0 hours the next. James studied for 8-9 hours every day, consistently. Consistency is the key.

●       Believe in Yourself: An “average” student from a small town in Manipur did it in his first attempt. This proves that where you come from does not matter. What matters is where you want to go and how hard you are willing to work for it.

Your journey is your own. It will have its own challenges and its own happy moments. Just keep walking, one step at a time. You are stronger than you think.

We hope James’s simple and honest story has filled your heart with hope and given you a clear path to follow. You can do it too! All the best!
