Vikas’s Background: How His RBI Journey Began

Vikas is a smart person. He did his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from a very good college, IIT BHU. After college, he got a good job in Mumbai. But like many of us, he had a bigger dream. In 2017, he decided to move to Delhi to prepare for the Civil Services exam. He wanted to serve the country.

While preparing for Civil Services, he came to know about the RBI Grade B exam. It’s a very respected job, and he thought he should try for it. So, he started preparing for RBI along with his Civil Services preparation.

But mixing two big exams is not easy, is it? He soon found out that this new journey would have its own challenges.

RBI Grade B Preparation Challenges: Why Things Weren’t Working

For his first 3 attempts, Vikas could not even clear the first stage of the exam, Phase 1. Can you imagine how that feels? You study so much, but you can’t even cross the first door. Have you ever felt this way? Stuck in one place?

Vikas knew something was wrong. He looked at his preparation carefully and found his biggest weak point. It was the Reasoning section. He said, “My weak point was reasoning.” This part of the exam was stopping him again and again.

He was working hard, but maybe not in the right direction. He even reached the interview stage last year, but couldn’t make it to the final list.

Starting all over again from zero after reaching so close is very, very difficult. It can make anyone feel low. But this is where Vikas’s real story of strength begins. Something inside him changed.

Mindset Shift for RBI Grade B Success

When you feel low, how do you motivate yourself? Vikas found two reasons to keep going.

One was a positive reason: He always asked himself, “Why do I want this RBI job?” He reminded himself of the good salary, the respect, and the great work-life balance. This “why” gave him energy.

The second was a negative reason, but a helpful one!

“I can’t keep preparing for so long… If it’s not this year, then next year it may be more difficult.”

This thought pushed him to give his absolute best, right now.

This change in thinking made him look at his studies in a new way. He decided he wouldn’t just work hard; he would work smart.

Now here’s where Vikas really showed what smart preparation looks like.

His Smart Study Plan: How He Managed Everything

Let’s break down his simple and clever study plan.

RBI Grade B Phase 1 Strategy: His Clever Trick for Reasoning

Vikas knew Reasoning puzzles were his biggest problem. They took a lot of time and were very confusing. So, what did he do? He decided not to attempt the puzzles at all!

Yes, you read that right. He said, “I prepared the strategy that I will not touch that puzzle.”

Instead, he focused on the easier parts of Reasoning where he could score marks for sure. These were topics like:

  • Syllogism
  • Blood Relation
  • Direction Sense
  • Inequalities

This is a great lesson for you. You don’t have to be a master of everything. Sometimes, it’s smarter to focus on your strengths and manage your weaknesses.

Balancing Job and RBI Preparation: His Daily Study Routine

Vikas was working in a government job while preparing. Many of you might be in the same situation. How did he manage? He made a simple and realistic routine.

He gave 2-3 hours every day on working days. On weekends (Saturday and Sunday), he studied for 5-6 hours. This shows that you don’t need to study 12 hours a day. What you need is consistency. Little by little, every single day.

RBI Grade B Phase 2 Preparation: Using His Strengths

His Civil Services preparation helped him a lot in the ESI (Economic and Social Issues) paper. But Finance and Management (FM) was new for him. He was worried at first, but he found it easier than ESI because the topics were very specific and static.

For descriptive answers, he used a simple trick from his UPSC days. Before typing an answer, he would spend one minute making a rough framework in points. This helped him structure his answer well. He reminds us, “I think they look more on the quality of your answer content actually than the quantity.”

His smart plan got him through the written exams. But the final test, the interview, was still left.

RBI Grade B Interview Strategy

Vikas had reached the interview last year too, but he got very bad marks. He knew he had to do something different this time. He realised that the most important thing in an interview is not just knowledge, but also your confidence.

“…One has to be positive and confident while in an interview. Knowledge part is, I think, already tested in phase two.”

This year, he focused on being calm and composed. He prepared all the basics from the RBI website, its reports, and speeches. He gave mock interviews and worked on the feedback.

The result? This year, he scored a very good 52 out of 75 marks in the interview! This great score helped him get into the final list.

Of course, no one can walk this long journey alone. Let’s see who was there to support him.

  • Be Smart, Not Stubborn: If a topic feels too hard right now, strengthen other scoring areas first and come back to it later.
  • Make a Smart Plan: Break your preparation into clear, achievable weekly targets instead of chasing everything at once.
  • Stay Consistent: Study a few focused hours daily rather than cramming occasionally — consistency builds confidence.
