A Bright Start: The IIT Dream and a Good Job
Abhishek was a bright student. He studied Civil Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, one of the best colleges in India. After finishing his studies, he got a good job as an Assistant Manager at L&T. He was doing well, had a nice job, and everything seemed perfect.
But deep inside, he felt a pull towards government service. He wanted to do something for the country. That little feeling in his heart was about to take him on a very long and challenging journey.
Let’s see what happened when he decided to follow this feeling.
When The First Plan Didn’t Work: The UPSC Chapter
Abhishek decided to leave his job and prepare for the UPSC exam. For two and a half years, he studied day and night. He gave it his everything, just like you are probably doing right now. He had a clear plan: to give three years to his UPSC dream.
But sometimes, even with all our hard work, things don’t go the way we hoped. He couldn’t clear the exam. Imagine how that feels. You leave a good job, you study so hard, and you are still not there. It can make you feel sad and confused, right?
Abhishek felt that too. But he saw it as a sign to look for a new path where his skills could shine. He loved economics, and this love opened a new door for him.
This is where his real journey towards SEBI began.

A New Hope: Turning Towards SEBI
Let’s talk about that moment when you decide to try something new.
Instead of feeling stuck, Abhishek started looking at other exams like RBI and SEBI. These exams needed knowledge of economics and finance, which he was interested in. He saw this as a fresh start, a new chance.
He knew it wouldn’t be easy. He was an engineer. Subjects like Commerce, Accountancy, and Companies Act were completely new to him. It felt like learning to write with a new hand.
Now here’s where Abhishek really showed what smart preparation looks like.
Abhishek’s Smart Study Plan: One Subject at a Time
This is the most important part! Let’s see how he studied for difficult subjects.
Facing the New Subjects: Commerce, Accounts, and Costing
For an engineer, Commerce and Accountancy can feel very strange. Abhishek felt this too. He knew he needed help. So, he joined EduTap’s course. Here’s what he did, and what you can learn from it:
- Follow a Path: He didn’t jump around. He watched the EduTap videos in the exact order they were given, from simple topics to hard ones. This built his confidence step-by-step.
- Active Learning for Costing: For Costing, which had many maths-like problems, he did something clever. When a question came in the video, he would pause it. He would try to solve it himself first. Only if he got stuck would he watch the solution. This made his brain work harder!
- Test Yourself Always: After every topic, he would solve the small quizzes. This helped him know if he really understood the topic or was just listening. It’s like checking your answer after every sum, right?
This slow and steady method helped him build a strong base in subjects that were once completely new to him.
But what about other tough subjects like the Companies Act?

Making Hard Subjects Easy: The Two-Step Note Trick
The Companies Act is huge and can be very confusing. So Abhishek used a special two-step note-making trick. This is something you can try too!
- Step 1: The Big, Rough Notes. First, he wrote down everything in a notebook by hand. These were his detailed, messy notes. This helped him understand everything for the first time.
- Step 2: The Small, Digital Notes. After that, he made short, clean notes on his computer from his rough notes. These were just 2-3 pages long! These were perfect for quick revision before the exam.
Whenever he felt confused while reading his short notes, he would go back to his big, rough notebook to understand it better. It made revision so simple and fast!
With his plan ready, it was time to face the real exam.
The Exam Days: Staying Calm and Being Smart
For Phase 1, Abhishek knew his strengths. As an engineer, he was good at Quant and Reasoning. So, he didn’t waste much time on them. Instead, he focused on General Awareness to clear the cut-off. This is a smart move – focus on what is needed most!
For Phase 2, the descriptive English paper was a new challenge. He practiced writing short essays of 200 words.
“Always keep the last 10 minutes to read your own answers. You will find small mistakes in grammar that you can fix!”
This small habit can give you extra marks that make all the difference.
Now, for the final step: the interview.

The Final Hurdle: The Interview
Abhishek had given an interview for the RBI exam before and had been very stressed. It did not go well. This time, he promised himself one thing: “I will just be myself. I will be honest.”
The interview panel asked him many tough questions about his engineering background. Some questions were so deep, he didn’t know the answers. Instead of guessing, he calmly and politely said he wasn’t familiar with that topic.
His honesty and calmness impressed the interviewers more than pretending to know everything. The lesson here is simple: it’s okay to not know everything. It’s more important to be genuine.
So, what is the final advice Abhishek has for all of you?

Tips for Your Journey
Abhishek knows that many students worry and feel they don’t have enough time. He says you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be smart. Here is his advice:
- Focus on Your Strengths: In the exam, first solve the questions you are sure about. This builds your confidence and saves time for the harder ones.
- Consistency is Key: Study every single day, even if it’s just for a few hours. A small step every day is better than a big jump once a week.
- Trust Your Support System: Abhishek trusted the structured course from EduTap for his weak areas. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or rely on good teachers and materials. You don’t have to do it all alone.
- Your Journey is Unique: Abhishek’s path changed from UPSC to SEBI. Your path might also have twists and turns. Embrace it. Don’t compare your story with anyone else’s.
Abhishek’s story teaches us that it’s not about never falling, but about finding a new path and walking on it with a smart plan and a hopeful heart. We at EduTap wish you all the very best. Keep learning, keep growing, and believe in your journey!
