Kunal’s Background and His First Steps

Kunal was a smart student who did his M.Com from Pune University. Like many of us, he had a big dream of working in a good government position. He was very interested in things like finance and economics because of his commerce background. It felt like the right path for him.

He started his preparation journey way back in 2016, right after finishing his bachelor’s degree. He was full of energy and hope, ready to try for the big exams. But the path was not straight. He faced many bumps along the way.

Let’s see what problems he faced when he first started preparing.

Early Struggles and Feeling a Little Lost

When Kunal started, he tried for many different exams. He appeared for the UPSC Civil Service exam, the CAPF exam, and even the IB ACIO exam. He worked very hard and even cleared the CAPF and IB ACIO exams, which was a great achievement!

But sometimes, even when you work hard, you don’t reach the exact place you wanted to be. He was trying to find the perfect fit for himself.

He didn’t even know much about exams for regulatory bodies like SEBI or RBI back then. He felt a bit stuck, just like many of us do when one plan doesn’t work out.

But then, something inside him changed. A small shift in thinking opened a whole new door for him.

A Big Change in Mindset: Finding the Right Path

While preparing, he discovered exams for regulatory bodies like SEBI. He realised that his knowledge of commerce and finance could be super useful here! This was a lightbulb moment for him. He saw a new opportunity where his skills truly matched the job.

He got very excited about working at SEBI because he saw how big India’s capital markets were becoming. This new goal gave him a fresh burst of energy.

“This is a place where I can really grow and make a difference.”

Now here’s where Kunal really showed what smart preparation looks like.

Kunal’s Smart Study Plan: Balancing a Job and Preparation

Kunal was working in an office, so he did not have the whole day to study. This is a big worry for many students, right? Here’s how he did it:

  • He studied for 3 to 4 hours every day after his office work. He was tired, but he was dedicated.
  • On weekends, when he had holidays, he studied for 8 to 10 hours. He used his holidays fully.
  • Even during office hours, if he got a small break, he would quickly read current affairs on his phone. Every minute was precious for him.

“It is possible for working professionals to clear competitive exams. It requires a balance of hard work, smart planning, and unwavering dedication.”

His Simple Strategy for Phase 1 Subjects

Kunal was very smart about how he studied each subject. He didn’t waste time on things he already knew well.

  • For Quant, Reasoning, and English: He knew he was good at these. So, he just gave 3-4 mock tests to check his level. He was scoring well, so he didn’t spend extra time here. He focused on his weak areas instead.
  • For Finance and Accounting: These were his strong subjects because of his M.Com degree. He watched some videos and read notes online. He didn’t buy big, fat books. He just found the right videos for each topic.
  • For the Companies Act: This subject needs a lot of memorization. Kunal had a brilliant trick for this!
  • He took a printout of the index of the Companies Act.
  • He highlighted the most important sections in the index.
  • He read this index every single day. This helped him remember the sections easily. Even in the exam, if he forgot the exact answer, he could eliminate the wrong options because he was so familiar with the index. What a simple and smart idea!

Kunal’s story teaches us that you don’t have to study everything for 10 hours. You just have to be smart about what you study and how you study it.

Facing the Exam and the Interview Room

Even with all the preparation, the exam day can be scary. Kunal faced a real problem during his Descriptive English paper. The computer keyboard was not smooth, and the screen only showed a few lines of the passage at a time. It was very difficult to read and type. He felt a little panicked. Did this ever happen to you?

But he had a plan. He had practiced mock tests, so he knew how to manage his time.

“Practise on keyboards that are not very good to get in touch with the reality of the exam.”

In Phase 2, he used a great trick for Paper 2. He first answered all the easy questions. For the difficult or long questions, he marked them for review and came back to them at the end. This way, he did not waste time on one hard question and miss three easy ones.

Now, let’s talk about the final step: the interview.

Inside the Interview Room

Kunal was expecting a simple question like “Tell me about yourself.” But the first question was a very deep, technical one! It was a surprise. The interview panel was very nice, but they asked him many questions about his answers, going deeper and deeper.

They also asked him why he had a gap between his degrees and how he managed to study with a full-time job. They wanted to see if he was being honest and if he was truly dedicated. Kunal answered calmly and explained his situation clearly. His honesty and confidence helped him a lot.

He knew that support from the right people is very important for this journey.

The Power of Good Support: Family, Seniors, and EduTap

No one can win a big battle alone. Kunal knew this. Before his final interview, he was nervous. He didn’t know what kind of questions would be asked.

So, what did he do? He took help. He talked to his seniors at his workplace and gave a few mock interviews. He gave his first mock interview at EduTap. He said that the panel at EduTap had senior people from RBI and NABARD who asked him very diverse questions.

“The seniors guided me on how to frame my answers better.”

This mock interview was a huge help. It prepared him for the surprise questions in the real interview and gave him the confidence to face the panel calmly.

It’s a big lesson for all of us: never be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s from your teachers, your family, or a platform like EduTap, good guidance can show you the right way when you are feeling lost.

Now, let’s hear some final words of advice directly from our friend, Kunal.

Kunal’s Message for You: Real and Simple Tips

Kunal wants to share a few simple things with all of you who are on this journey. This is not bookish advice; this is real advice from someone who has walked the same path.

“I believe that success might come sooner or later, but if you are determined, you will achieve it.”

  • Be Consistent, Not Perfect: Don’t stop studying. Even if you study for just two hours one day, it is better than studying for zero hours.
  • Don’t Feel Sad if You Don’t Clear One Exam: If one exam doesn’t go well, don’t lose hope. There is always another opportunity waiting for you. Stay positive and look for the next chance.
  • Manage Your Time in the Exam Hall: The exam is a race against time. If a question is too hard, skip it! Finish the easy ones first. You can always come back to the hard one later if you have time.
  • Understand, Don’t Just Mug Up: Except for some things like the Companies Act, most subjects need understanding. Try to understand the concepts from your heart. This will help you answer any type of question.

His journey teaches us that with a simple heart, a smart plan, and a never-give-up spirit, you can achieve your dream too.

So, what can you do starting today?

  4. Ask for Help: If you feel stuck, talk to a senior, a teacher, or a mentor. You are not alone on this journey.
