From Kolkata to a Big Choice: Chetan’s Early Life

Chetan grew up in Kolkata in a business family. When you are the only son, everyone thinks you will join the family business, right? That’s what was expected of him. But Chetan loved studying. He did his Chartered Accountancy (CA) and then also became a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). He wanted to build a career with his own knowledge.

He was very close to his mother, and the thought of moving away for a job was a little scary. But his family was very happy and proud when he chose to study more. They supported his dream. Sometimes, the people who love us understand our dreams even before we do.

But just having degrees is not enough, is it? The real journey was about to start.

When Things Don’t Go as Planned: Early Struggles

After finishing his CA and CFA, Chetan went to Mumbai with big hopes. He wanted a job in finance, but companies offered him auditing jobs because he was new. It felt sad because he had studied so hard for something else. It’s like preparing for a cricket match and being asked to play football.

He came back to Kolkata and started a training center with his brother. It was his own little business! But then, the pandemic came, and everything stopped. Their offline classes couldn’t run anymore. Chetan was married and felt the pressure to have a stable job. It was a really tough time. He had to accept that his business idea didn’t work out as he had hoped.

His family suggested he get a job now. It was hard for him to agree, but he asked them for just one more year. One more year to try for his dream government job.

That one year was about to change everything for him. Let’s see what he did next.

A New Plan, A New Hope: The Shift to Government Exams

In 2021, Chetan decided to prepare for regulatory body exams like SEBI, NABARD, and PFRDA. He knew his CA background would help here. The biggest support came from his family. His father took care of all the family duties so that Chetan could just focus on his books.

Chetan’s study style was very different. He didn’t believe in studying for 8 or 10 hours every day. Instead, he believed in smart planning.

“Consistency is not about how many hours you study, but how well you stick to your plan.”

Here is what his smart plan looked like:

  • Know Yourself: He would sit with a pen and paper and write down his strong subjects (like Accountancy) and weak subjects (like Quant).
  • Make a Daily Mix: He would study a tough subject for some time and then switch to an easy one to keep his mind fresh.
  • Have a Plan B: He always had a backup plan. If he couldn’t study one day, he knew how he would cover it up the next day without feeling stressed.

He knew that for exams like SEBI, he just needed to clear the basic cutoff in Quant and Reasoning, not be a topper in it. So, he focused on getting just enough marks there and scoring big in his strong areas.

Now, let’s see how he used this plan to face the real exams.

Facing the Exam Hall: Strategy for Phase 1 & 2

Chetan gave many exams like PFRDA and NABARD before his main SEBI exam. Why? To get comfortable with the exam hall feeling. Giving mock exams and other similar exams helps you feel less nervous on the main day.

His Smart Strategy for Paper 2

This is how he broke down the big syllabus into small, easy parts.

  • Companies Act: He made a small study group with friends. They would discuss chapters on calls. This made a boring subject interesting and easy to remember.
  • Costing & Accounts: For numericals, If you are from a non-commerce background, he suggests watching YouTube videos to understand the basics.

“Don’t just learn the formula. Understand where it comes from. Then you will never forget it.”

  • Management & Economics: These subjects had tricky questions. Chetan made his own simple notes and watched EduTap’s videos to make them easy. He believed that with a good teacher, no subject is too hard.

A Simple Plan for Descriptive English

For English, he watched Narveer Sir’s videos on YouTube to understand how to write good answers. He read the ‘Economic Times’ newspaper daily to get new ideas and words. Most importantly, he practiced writing answers within the time limit. In the exam, it’s not just about knowing, it’s about writing fast enough!

After clearing the written tests, there was one final step: the interview. Let’s see how that went.

The Final Step: Chetan’s Interview Experience

The interview can feel like the scariest part. Here’s what we can learn from Chetan’s experience.

Chetan was confident because he had a teaching background and had given mock interviews at EduTap. But the interview started with a surprise! The first question was not “Tell me about yourself.” Instead, they asked him a very tough question about his past. It shook his confidence for a moment.

This teaches us a big lesson: Be prepared for anything in the interview.

But Chetan handled it well. During the 40-minute interview, he was honest. When he didn’t know the answer to two questions, he simply said, “Sir, I am sorry, I don’t know the answer to this.” The interviewers liked his honesty. It’s always better to be honest than to guess and give a wrong answer.

His habit of reading the newspaper helped him answer questions on the economy. He also shared that mock interviews are super helpful.

“Mock interviews at EduTap made me feel comfortable. It felt like I had already been in that room before.”

And with that, his long and patient journey finally reached its beautiful destination.
