The ALC is a Group A Gazetted post under the Central Labour Service. The work involves preventing and settling industrial disputes, enforcing central labour laws, acting as a conciliator between workers and employers, and discharging quasi-judicial functions under several Acts. The board understands exactly what this role demands. They will check whether you do too.

Subject knowledge will come up. But composure, clarity of thought, and a genuine understanding of the job matter just as much.

UPSC ALC Interview: Pattern and Key Details

Mode

• The UPSC ALC interview is conducted offline, in person.

Language

• You can choose Hindi or English for the UPSC ALC interview.
• No regional language option is available.

Marking Scheme

• The interview carries 100 marks.
• There is no negative marking.
• Here are the category-wise minimum qualifying marks:
  • UR/General: 50 marks
  • OBC: 45 marks
  • SC/ST/PwBD: 40 marks

Duration

• The UPSC Assistant Labour Commissioner interview typically lasts 20 to 45 minutes.
• There is no fixed time per candidate. It depends on the board and how the conversation flows.

Weightage

• Your final selection is based on a 75:25 ratio, where 75% weightage is from the Recruitment Test and 25% from the interview.

Location: 

• UPSC Headquarters, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi. 
• There are no regional centres. 
• Every candidate appears at this single location regardless of home state.

How Many Candidates Get Called for the UPSC ALC Interview?

UPSC calls candidates at a ratio of approximately 1:3. That is, three candidates per available vacancy.

In the 2022 recruitment cycle, there were 29 vacancies. At that ratio, roughly 90 candidates were called for the UPSC ALC interview stage.

You have cleared the RT, but you are still competing with approximately two other candidates for every available seat. 

Is There a Defined Syllabus for the ALC Interview?

No official syllabus exists for the Assistant Labour Commissioner interview. It is a personality test. 

The board draws questions from your DAF, academic background, work history, understanding of the ALC role, and current affairs.

Preparation is entirely possible. You just need to know what areas to focus on.

What Happens on UPSC ALC Interview Day?

Reporting Slots

• Interviews are held in two slots.
  • Morning slot: 9:00 AM 
  • Afternoon slot: 1:00 PM

• Your call letter will specify which one applies to you. 
• Reach the venue at least 30 to 45 minutes before your slot time.

Waiting Time after Reporting 

• Document verification happens before you enter the interview room. 
• Depending on your position in the queue and the pace of the board, the wait can range from 30 minutes to 3 hours.

After the Interview

Once your interview is done and the documents are submitted, you are free to leave.

Rescheduling 

• Not possible under any circumstances. 
• Missing your assigned slot risks cancellation of candidature.

UPSC ALC Interview Call Letter

After your RT result is declared, UPSC sends the interview call letter to your registered email ID. 

An SMS alert is also sent. Your RT roll number carries forward to this stage.

The UPSC Assistant Labour Commissioner interview admit card is released generally 2 to 3 weeks before the interview date.

Important Note: Carry a printed hard copy to the venue. Digital copies are not accepted at UPSC premises. Both black-and-white and colour printouts are acceptable.

• The board receives your Detailed Application Form (DAF) before the interview begins. 
• A large portion of UPSC ALC interview questions comes directly from what you have written in it. 
• Go through every entry you have put in your DAF and prepare to speak on it.

3. Academic background

• Your graduation and post-graduation subjects, and why you chose your field.
• Any gaps between degrees, and how you account for them.
• How your academic background connects to the demands of the ALC role.

4. Work experience

• Your actual responsibilities at current or past jobs, not just designations.
• Specific examples of problem-solving or handling complex situations.
• Why do you want to move to the ALC role? 
• Frame this around what draws you to the position rather than what you are leaving behind.

5. Hobbies and interests

• Only list hobbies you have genuinely pursued.
• Be ready to speak on any listed hobby for 2 to 3 minutes.
• Follow-up questions on hobbies can go deeper than most candidates expect.

6. Achievements

• Academic, professional, or personal.
• Know what you learned from each one, not just what you accomplished.

7. Subject Knowledge and Current Affairs

• You have already cleared the RT. There is no need to restart preparation from scratch. 
• Revise your RT-level subject knowledge and stay updated on current affairs from the RT result date until the interview.
• Read the newspaper in the days leading up to your interview. The board sometimes picks up on news that broke after the RT was conducted.

Should You Join an Interview Guidance Programme?

A structured guidance programme helps if you want mock interview practice and feedback on your answers and body language. 

It is not mandatory if you are confident in self-preparation.

What to Wear in the UPSC ALC Interview?

Male candidates:

• Formal shirt and trousers
• Optional blazer
• Polished formal shoes
• Avoid very bright colours

Female candidates:

• Saree, formal salwar suit, or western formal wear

Behaviour and Body Language During the Interview

1. Eye contact: Look at the board member asking the question. Shift naturally when another member takes over the discussion.
2. Posture: Sit upright. Avoid slouching, fidgeting, or excessive hand gestures.
3. Listening: Let the question finish before you begin answering. Do not interrupt.
4. Composure: If a question is difficult, take a moment before responding. A brief pause is far better than a rushed or incorrect answer.
5. When you do not know: Say so honestly. Something like “I do not have complete information on this, but based on what I know…” is a far better response than bluffing. The board can tell the difference.

Do

• Prepare every entry in your DAF thoroughly. Each one is a potential question.
• Practice speaking your answers out loud. Structure matters when you are responding verbally.

UPSC does not arrange accommodation. Make your own stay arrangements well in advance.

Travel Reimbursement for the UPSC ALC Interview

UPSC provides travel reimbursement to outstation candidates only.

What is covered:

• Second-class sleeper train fare via the shortest route
• Ordinary state transport bus fare

What is not covered:

• Flights
• AC train coaches (1A, 2A, 3A)
• AC or Volvo buses
• Taxis, autos, or cab aggregators
• Accommodation and food expenses

How to claim Reimbursement?

Submit the following at the venue after your interview:

• UPSC travel reimbursement form, provided at the venue.
• Photocopy of your train or bus ticket.
• Bank account details.

Reimbursement is credited to your bank account within 2 to 6 weeks.

UPSC ALC Detailed Application Form (DAF)

Every candidate who clears the RT must fill out the DAF before the UPSC ALC interview stage. 

The board receives your DAF before the interview and uses it to frame questions throughout the session.

You fill it out online within the deadline set by UPSC after the RT result.

Can you Edit DAF after Submission? 

No. Review every entry thoroughly before final submission. 

Download a copy once submitted and keep it with you. Your interview responses must be consistent with what you have written.

DAF Dos and Don’ts:

• Upload clear and legible scanned copies.

Don’ts

• Don’t add claims or achievements you cannot verify with documents.

What to Carry on UPSC ALC Interview Day?

Carry all of the following without exception:

• Printed hard copy of your UPSC ALC interview call letter. Digital copies are not accepted.
• Original photo ID such as Aadhaar, Passport, PAN, Voter ID, or Driving Licence
• Educational certificates including Class 10, Class 12, graduation, and post-graduation if applicable
• Category or PwBD certificate if applicable
• Experience certificate if applicable
• No Objection Certificate if you are currently employed in a government or PSU role
• 2 to 3 sets of photocopies of all documents
• 2 passport-size photographs
• A pen for filling out forms at the venue

Missing documents can lead to disqualification. UPSC does not accept documents submitted after the interview day.

What Not to Carry?

The following items are not permitted inside the interview premises:

• Mobile phones, even if switched off
• Smartwatches or digital watches. Analog watches are permitted.
• Books, notes, or any written material
• Electronic gadgets including laptops, tablets, earphones, and power banks
• Bags or backpacks

UPSC does not provide a baggage deposit facility at the venue. Do not bring valuables.

You may be accompanied by a family member or friend up to the main gate. No one is permitted inside the UPSC premises with you.
