UPSC CSAT 2026 Complete Information

CSAT’s full form is the Civil Services Aptitude Test, which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission as a part of the Civil Services Exam (CSE). UPSC CSAT is also known as UPSC Prelims General Studies Paper 2. It was introduced in the UPSC exam pattern in 2011. 

From its introduction in 2011 till 2014, the marks of both General Studies Paper 1 and Paper 2 (CSAT paper) were added to calculate the cut-off marks for the UPSC Prelims exam. In 2015, UPSC made the CSAT paper qualifying in nature.

UPSC CSAT 2026 Subjects and Syllabus

The official notification of the UPSC Civil Services Examination specifies the syllabus of the CSAT paper as follows:

1. Comprehension
2. Interpersonal skills, including communication skills 
3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability 
4. Decision-making and problem-solving 
5. General mental ability 
6. Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc. (Class X level)
7. Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. (Class X level) 

For your easy understanding, the above syllabus can be divided into 5 subjects:

3. English
4. Decision Making and Problem Solving
5. Communication Skills

No question has been asked from Decision Making and Communication Skills since 2014. So the 3 subjects that you need to prepare are Maths, Reasoning and English.

UPSC CSAT 2026 Pattern

• The CSAT paper is qualifying in nature and is conducted in pen and paper mode.
• It consists of objective-type multiple-choice questions.
• Candidates are provided with a question paper booklet and an OMR sheet. 
• The paper is available in both English and Hindi languages.
• There are a total of 80 objective questions that you need to solve within 2 hours and there is no sectional timing. 

Qualifying Marks for UPSC CSAT Paper

To qualify for this paper, candidates must score a minimum of 33% out of 200, which is 66 marks.

Marking Scheme for the UPSC CSAT Exam

• The total marks for the CSAT General Studies Paper 2 are 200.
• There are 80 objective questions, each worth 2.5 marks.

Negative Marking in UPSC CSAT

• There is a negative marking of 1/3rd marks, i.e. 0.83 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer.
• No marks are deducted if a candidate leaves a question blank on the OMR sheet.

Is UPSC CSAT Tough?

The answer to this question varies from person to person. UPSC CSAT is difficult for the following aspirants who:

• Overlook the importance of the CSAT paper 2, assuming that their basic Math and English knowledge is enough.
• Often ignore the importance of examining the previous years’ question papers for the CSAT and miss out on understanding the expected difficulty and the types of questions asked.

Will CSAT be Removed from UPSC?

UPSC introduced CSAT in 2011 as a Paper 2 alongside the General Studies Paper 1. Soon after its introduction, CSAT quickly became a subject of controversy, sparking protests and concerns among aspirants. 

In response to the concerns raised by aspirants, the UPSC made some changes in 2015. From 2011 to 2014, merit was calculated by combining marks from both GS and CSAT. However, in 2015, CSAT was made qualifying in nature.

The CSAT paper is here to stay and aspirants must prepare for it well.
