Hello, future officers! Have you ever felt like your dreams are really, really big, but your current life or money problems make them feel far away? Well, today, we’re going to talk about someone amazing, Ankit Kumar, who proved that big dreams, a strong heart, and smart planning can make anything possible. He cleared the EPFO EO/AO exam with a super good rank of 127!
Ankit’s story isn’t just about clearing an exam; it’s about understanding your own struggles, finding your path, and never giving up. He faced many challenges, just like many of you might be facing now.
Let’s start by looking at where Ankit began his journey.

His Background and Family
Ankit’s journey started in 2015 when he finished his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Right after that, his first big goal was to find a job.
Why? Because his family didn’t have a lot of money, and he knew he had to help out.
While he was looking for a job, he also had a secret dream: he wanted to clear the UPSC Civil Services exam. But he knew he needed a stable job first. So, he worked hard and got a job as an LDC (Lower Division Clerk) through the SSC CHSL exam in 2018. Later, in 2019, he also finished his BA in Political Science from IGNOU.
This shows us that Ankit was always thinking ahead and working hard for his future, even when things were tough.
But his journey wasn’t easy; he faced many hurdles right from the start.
Early Struggles and Setbacks
Imagine this: Ankit was working full-time, doing an LDC job, and trying to prepare for UPSC! That’s like trying to juggle three heavy balls at once. He lived in Mumbai, which is a busy city, and he had to manage everything – office work, cooking food, cleaning his room, and even family responsibilities.
He told us that balancing all these things was very difficult. He made big sacrifices. He didn’t go home for one or even one-and-a-half years sometimes! During lunch breaks at work, while others chatted, he would quickly eat and watch study videos. He avoided hanging out with friends because he knew even one day out would make him tired and lose two-three days of study time. He even learned to finish his office work faster so he could save time for studies.
Now, let’s see how Ankit decided to focus on a new path.

His Mindset Change From UPSC to UPSC EPFO
Ankit’s main goal was always civil service. He gave his first UPSC Prelims in 2021 and cleared it! That’s a huge step, right? But then, he didn’t do well in the Mains exam because he wasn’t fully ready for it. This made him think, “What if I keep trying for UPSC and it doesn’t work out? My age is also going up.” He was working as an LDC (Level 4 job) and wanted something better, something more secure.
Then, the EPFO EO/AO exam notification came out in 2023. He attended a live session from EduTap where we explained all about the EPFO exam and its benefits.
“This is a Level 8 job from UPSC itself! If I clear this, I’ll have a good base, a good job, and then I can continue preparing for UPSC without worrying too much.”
He saw it as a win-win situation.
So, how did he tackle this new exam with such a smart approach?
His UPSC EPFO EO/AO Preparation Strategy
When Ankit saw the EPFO syllabus, he didn’t panic. He knew a big part of it was like UPSC General Studies, which he was already good at. So, he thought, “My real competition will be in the new topics!” He focused his energy on subjects like Accounts, Industrial Relations, Labour Laws, Social Security, English, Math, and Reasoning. He knew that if he mastered these, he would have a big advantage.
Here’s how he planned his studies:
- Reverse Engineering with PYQs: He looked at previous year’s questions (PYQs) very carefully. He saw what kind of questions were asked, from which topics, and how often. This helped him understand what was truly important to study.
- Targeted Learning: He used EduTap’s course, but very smartly. He didn’t watch every video. He focused only on the “special sections” (like Accounts, Labour Laws) that were new to him. For Accounts, he said he watched only about 30% of the lectures, just enough to build a strong base.
- Filling Gaps: For anything he didn’t understand, he used YouTube, Google, and even ChatGPT! He was open to using all tools available to make sure his understanding was clear.
- Smart Notes for Revision: He didn’t make physical notes because that takes too much time. Instead, he took screenshots of important points from PDFs (like EduTap’s notes) and put them in OneNote. He made short notes from those screenshots, and even shorter notes from those short notes! This multi-layered approach helped him revise very quickly.
“Revision bahut important hai success ke liye.”

Ankit had a clear four-month plan: the first 3 months were for completing the syllabus, and the last month was purely for revision and filling any remaining gaps.
“My main focus was to complete the syllabus well once, because if I give too much attention to one section, in the end, I need to get marks.”
And what about his daily schedule? He said he never had a fixed routine because it was hard to follow while working. So, instead of focusing on a timetable, he focused on “deliverables” – what he needed to achieve each day. He would wake up, rush to office, use his lunch breaks to read the newspaper or study. He lived just 10 minutes from his office to save travel time.
And guess what? His roommates were very supportive and would even cook for him so he could study! He would often study until midnight, averaging 5-6 hours of study every single day, even with a full-time job.
His hard work in planning and studying paid off, but the real test was still ahead.
His UPSC EPFO EO/AO Exam & Interview Experience
When Ankit sat for the Recruitment Test (RT), he said the EPFO EO/AO paper was “itna tough tha, itna lengthy tha aur time bhi kam tha“. He had to increase his speed a lot! He usually does better in tough papers, and that’s exactly what happened. He thought he might not clear it, but he did!
Then came the interview, and this was a huge challenge. Ankit had never given an interview before, and now it was for UPSC! He was “very very nervous.” He did many mock interviews and learned all the tricks: how to answer, how not to lie, how to say sorry if he didn’t know something. But his nervousness wouldn’t go away. He often knew the answers but couldn’t speak them properly. Have you ever felt so nervous that your mind goes blank?
Here’s what he did, and this is truly amazing: With just two days left for the interview, he tried a “reverse psychology” trick. Instead of telling himself, “I must be confident,” he told himself, “What’s the worst that can happen? They’ll just fail me. I don’t care if it goes bad.” He kept repeating this to himself. He also used ChatGPT to practice. He would ask ChatGPT to give him the toughest questions on any topic and then just compliment him, telling him he did well, so he could build confidence without fear of judgment.
The Chairman Ma’am asked him, “You’re moving from a Level 4 job to a Level 8 job; that’s good. But is there any other reason you want to join EPFO?” Ankit gave a heartfelt answer, saying he wanted to help vulnerable people who earn less than ₹15,000, especially when they need money in tough times. He also loved the idea of a dual role, working both in the office (Accounts Officer) and in the field (Enforcement Officer).
The panel seemed very impressed because he gave sincere, on-the-ground answers, not just general bookish ones. His honesty and genuine desire to serve shone through.
Every journey needs support, and Ankit had some special people and resources help him along the way.

Support from His Family and EduTap
Ankit mentioned that his family, especially his parents, were his biggest support. Even though they didn’t talk much during his intense study periods, they understood. They never complained and never shared their own problems with him, so he could focus fully on his studies without getting disturbed.
He also found help from EduTap. He shared an interesting story: when he noticed some older content in the course, he called us. To his surprise, we connected him directly to the content creator! He told them what needed updating, and guess what? It got updated! He felt this quick response was “bahut accha laga” (very good). He also praised the content, saying it was “reliable” and “good,” and he even plans to use his notes from EduTap PDFs for future exams like APFC.
It’s important to remember that you don’t have to walk this path alone. Whether it’s your family’s quiet support or a study platform that listens to you, every little bit of help counts.
Ankit’s journey is truly inspiring, showing us that with dedication, smart planning, and a strong belief in ourselves, we can overcome any obstacle.
