Getting selected through the EPFO exam is one thing. The EPFO training that comes next is what most candidates know very little about.
Before your first independent posting, before you handle a single compliance case or process a claim, every newly selected EPFO officer goes through a structured training programme.
The EPFO training is different for APFC officers and EO/AO officers. Both start at the same place, but the modules, duration, and depth are quite different.
This article covers the EPFO training in full for both EO/AO and APFC. Where it happens, how long it runs, what the schedule looks like, what your salary is, who you meet, and what comes after.

Where Does EPFO Training Take Place?
All EPFO training starts at one institution:
Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya National Academy of Social Security 30-31,
Institutional Area, Janakpuri, New Delhi
110058
Every selected officer, whether EO/AO or APFC, begins here. PDUNASS is the apex EPFO training institute and the official EPFO training centre for all induction and in-service programmes, functioning under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
It was set up in 1990 and is the central hub for all EPFO induction training.
EPFO officer training does not start at any regional office or field location.
Newly selected officers travel to New Delhi and report to PDUNASS before any other assignment.
What Is PDUNASS Like?
PDUNASS is a full residential training campus in the Janakpuri area of New Delhi.
The campus has lecture halls, seminar rooms, a residential hostel, dining facilities, computer labs, and a library. Everything needed during training is available on campus.
The academy handles induction training, in-service training, probationary examinations, and research in the social security domain.
PDUNASS also has four Zonal Training Institutes and one Sub-Zonal Training Institute under it, which handle regional training and some probationary exam centres.
So, PDUNASS is where your EPFO training begins and where your probationary exam is also held.

Is there any other Training Location?
Yes. EPFO happens PDUNASS.
For APFC officers, 2 months of legal training are conducted at a National Law University. This covers labour laws, quasi-judicial proceedings, and legal interpretation relevant to EPFO’s enforcement work.
For EO/AO officers, parts of training happen at National Law Institutes, at offices of the Accountant General (for balance sheet examination from the EPF perspective), and at NDC for hands-on software training.
Field office attachments at Regional Offices and District Offices form the on-the-job training phase for both posts.
PDUNASS also has a second examination centre at its Faridabad Campus (ZTI-North), which is used for probationary examinations.

How Long is EPFO Training?
The EPFO training period is different for each post.
EPFO APFC Training: Around 12 Months
The EPFO APFC Training period for Assistant Provident Fund Commissioners is approximately 12 months.
| EPFO APFC Training Module-Wise Duration | |
| Module | Duration |
| PDUNASS Core Curriculum | 3 months |
| On-the-Job Training (field offices and HQ) | 6 months |
| National Law University (legal training) | 2 months |
| IT Training | ~1 Months |
| Bharat Bhraman | |
| Behavioural and Attitude Training | |
The 3-month PDNASS core covers Social Security concepts, EPF Act and all its schemes, and associated functional areas.
The legal training at NLU prepares APFCs for quasi-judicial proceedings and labour law interpretation, both of which are central to the APFC role.
Bharat Bhraman is a unique component. Officers visit major industrial clusters across India to understand ground-level working conditions, which they will later regulate.
It is field education, not tourism.
EPFO EO/AO Training: 6 Months
The EPFO Enforcement Officer training period is 6 months. Accounts Officers follow the same schedule.
| EPFO EO/AO Training Module Wise Duration | |
| Module | Duration |
| Residential training at PDUNASS | 4 weeks |
| National Law Institutes | 4 weeks |
| Accountant General Office | 2 weeks |
| NDC (SSP, Unified Portal, UAN, CAIU software) | 1 week |
| On-the-job training at Regional Offices | 14 weeks |
The 14-week OJT phase happens at the officer’s assigned Regional Office.
Each EO/AO trainee rotates through different sections and also visits exempted and unexempted establishments for field exposure.
Every EO/AO is assigned a mentor during this phase for guidance and doubt resolution.
What Is the EPFO Probation Period for EO/AO and APFC Officers?
The EPFO probation period is 2 years, starting from your date of appointment. Training happens inside this probation period. It does not run separately.
Both EO/AO and APFC officers serve a 2-year probation period. To complete probation and get confirmed in service, officers must pass the Probationary Examination conducted by PDUNASS.
This is mandatory. It is not a formality. The probationary exam covers the EPF Act, schemes, accounts, and labour law, and includes a Computer Proficiency Test.
If an officer does not qualify within the prescribed time, probation can be extended. Additional attempts are given. But failing repeatedly affects confirmation and leaves a mark on service records.
The EPFO officer training process includes departmental training, supervised field work, OJT journal maintenance, and a formal probationary examination.

Is EPFO Training Residential? What are the Facilities?
Yes. The initial classroom phase of EPFO induction training at PDUNASS is fully residential. Officers stay in the campus hostel.
Meals are served at the campus dining facility. Officers manage the mess through a committee elected from among themselves, which is different from a standard hostel setup.
Each officer is a member of the mess and shares responsibility for making the dining experience work for everyone.
Sports and Recreation
The PDUNASS campus has sports facilities. Officers use evening time for physical activity. Group exercises and outbound sessions are part of the programme.
Other Facilities
The campus has a library, computer labs for software training, seminar rooms, and spaces for group activities. Officers do not need to go outside the campus for daily requirements during the residential phase.
Family members do not stay on campus during training. The hostel is for officer trainees only.
What Should You Carry for EPFO Training?
PDUNASS provides the essentials: accommodation, meals, and training material. You do not need to bring much beyond personal necessities.
What should you carry?
- Personal clothing (formal for training sessions, casual for evenings)
- Toiletries and personal items
- Stationery and a notebook
- Any books or reference material you want to revisit
- ID documents and joining kit as specified in the offer letter
EPFO provides study material during training.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like During EPFO Training?
The EPFO training schedule during the classroom phase at PDUNASS looks roughly like this, based on the training structure and EPFO’s own documentation:
| EPFO EO/AO & APFC Training Schedule | |
| Time | Activity |
| Morning | Yoga / Physical Activity |
| Forenoon | Lectures and Training Sessions |
| Afternoon | Lectures, Case Studies, Presentations |
| Evening | Sports, Free Time, Self-Study |
| Weekends | Outbound Activities, Field Visits, Group Exercises |
The EPFO training schedule fills most of the working day. Evenings are generally free.
Weekends often have outbound or field learning components built in.
Is EPFO Training Hectic?
The days at the EPFO training are structured. The atmosphere at PDUNASS is closer to a residential academic programme than a high-pressure corporate training.
Lectures and sessions go through the day. Evenings are free. Officers who have gone through the programme describe it as genuinely useful.
The on-the-job training phase is more demanding in a different way. You are working in live offices, handling real files, and rotating through departments on a schedule. That phase requires focus and adaptability more than classroom endurance.

What Is the EPFO Training Salary?
Officers receive their full salary from day one. There is no reduction in pay during training.
| EPFO EO/AO & APFC Gross Salary | |
| Post | Gross Salary |
| EO/AO | ₹90,880/month |
| APFC | ₹1,15,679/month |
During the residential phase at PDUNASS, accommodation and meals are covered by EPFO. Your full salary still comes in.
All standard allowances apply from the start of EPFO training: Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and other applicable components.
The EPFO training period salary is the same as the regular salary. There is no training-period deduction.

What Are the EPFO Training Modules?
The EPFO training modules follow three broad categories as defined in EPFO Training Policy 2022:
1. Domain Knowledge: EPF Act 1952, EPS 1995, EDLI Scheme, all associated circulars, Social Security legislation, labour laws, compliance framework, pensions, accounts, claims, and legal procedures. This is the core of the EPFO APFC training and EO/AO training.
2. Functional Skills Hands-on training on application software — Unified Portal, SSP, UAN portal, CAIU, e-inspection system, e-proceeding module. Also covers MS Office, e-office, note-taking and drafting, data analysis, and general computing skills.
3. Behavioural Training Leadership, communication, emotional intelligence, stress management, organizational ethics, gender sensitivity, and attitude development. This is not optional filler. EPFO’s own training policy gives it significant weight, especially for Group A officers.

What Does EPFO On-the-Job Training Cover?
The on-the-job component is where EPFO training becomes real.
For APFC officers, the OJT spans 24 weeks and covers every major department.
| EPFO On-the-Job Training | |
| Department | Duration |
| Accounts and Claims | 4 weeks |
| Compliance and Damages | 4 weeks |
| Audit | 1 week |
| Administration and Coordination | 2 weeks |
| Recovery | 2 weeks |
| Exemption | 2 weeks |
| Pension | 2 weeks |
| Cash | 1 week |
| Citizen Services Division | 2 weeks |
| Intelligence | 2 weeks |
| Legal | 2 weeks |
Each rotation involves attachment with senior officers: DA, SS, AO, EO, APFC, RPFC-II, or RPFC-I depending on the section. The idea is to see each process being handled, not just read about it.
Officers must maintain an On-the-Job Training Journal throughout. It is signed by the OIC of the posting office and reviewed by the ACC of the Zone.
What Should You Prepare Before Joining EPFO Training?
PDUNASS is designed to build your knowledge from the ground up. You are not expected to walk in already knowing the EPF Act or accounting manuals by heart. However, some preparation helps.
1. EPF Act basics
Read through the EPF and MP Act 1952 at least once before joining. Just a reading, not a detailed study. The training covers it thoroughly, but familiarity makes sessions easier to follow.
2. Labour law overview
Knowing the basic structure of the Labour Codes (Code on Social Security 2020, Code on Wages, etc.) and how they relate to EPFO’s mandate will help in the legal training phase.
3. Current EPFO developments
Stay updated on recent EPFO circulars, new portal features, the Centralised Pension Payment System, and any major policy changes in EPF/EPS. These come up during discussions and show up in the probationary exam later.
4. Basic IT skills
The training includes hands-on work on EPFO’s application software. Basic MS Office competence and comfort with online portals will save time.
You do not need to read accounting textbooks or study labour economics before joining. The training handles all of that. A light preparatory reading is enough.

Field Visits and Exposure During EPFO Training
One of the standout features of EPFO APFC training is the Bharat Bhraman component. Officers travel to major industrial clusters across India.
The objective is to see firsthand how labour works in different industries: textile clusters, manufacturing zones, service sector establishments, and to understand the real-world context of compliance and social security enforcement.
During the compliance rotation, visits to both exempted and unexempted establishments are mandatory. Officers see how establishments handle EPF compliance, what exemptions look like in practice, and what non-compliance typically involves.
For EO/AO training, the 14-week OJT includes a visit to at least one District Office and one Zonal Office of the zone. This gives a picture of how EPFO’s organizational structure works beyond the Regional Office level.
Who Do You Meet During EPFO Training?
This is one of the genuine advantages of the PDUNASS experience.
During training and the probationary period, officers get access to senior EPFO leadership. Guest lectures and interaction sessions are a regular part of the programme.
Officers get to meet and ask questions to:
- The Central Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC): the head of EPFO
- Additional Central PF Commissioners (ACCs)
- Regional Provident Fund Commissioners
- PDUNASS faculty with decades of field experience
- Officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment
- Experts from international bodies like ITC-ILO and ISSA, when collaborative sessions are organized
For someone just starting a career in public administration, this kind of access to senior officials is rare.

Are There Assessments During EPFO Training?
Yes. Multiple assessments run through the EPFO training period.
1. Probationary Examination
This is the formal and mandatory test for APFC officers. Conducted by PDUNASS, it covers the EPF Act, schemes, accounting, and labour law, and includes a Computer Proficiency Test (practical component). Papers are a mix of MCQ and descriptive format.
For EO/AO officers, a separate examination scheme with different papers applies.
Qualifying the probationary examination is a precondition for confirmation in service. Officers who do not clear it within the prescribed probation period face extended probation.
2. OJT Journal Assessment
The On-the-Job Training Journal is assessed throughout the OJT phase. The OIC of each posting office signs off on it. The ACC of the Zone reviews it periodically.
What you document and how you document, it reflects your engagement with each department.
3. Continuous Assessment During Probation
EPFO follows a monitoring approach during probation. Conduct, responsiveness, performance in assigned work, and learning progress are all tracked.
Confirmation at the end of 2 years is based on overall performance, not just the probationary exam score.
What Happens If You Resign During EPFO Training?
You can resign during the probation period. EPFO does not have a strict training bond structure. You are expected to give advance notice before your resignation takes effect.
There is no financial penalty for leaving during probation, as long as the resignation is submitted through the proper channel with the required notice period.
Officers who resign during training forfeit the position, but there is no bond amount to pay back.

Where are EPFO Officers Posted After Training?
After training, officers are posted to their assigned Regional Offices or District Offices.
EPFO has a presence across India.
| EPFO Offices Across India | |
| Office Type | Locations |
| Head Office | New Delhi |
| Zonal Offices | North, South, East, West Zones |
| Regional Offices | 135+ across India Covering every State |
| District Offices | Multiple Under each Regional Office |
Major cities with significant EPFO presence include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Patna, and many more.
EPFO is a pan-India service. New officers should be prepared for posting anywhere in the country. Home state posting is not guaranteed for the first assignment.
The initial posting is decided by EPFO based on vacancies and organizational requirements.

Which Sections and Departments Can EPFO Officers Work In?
EPFO is a multi-department organization. Officers are posted to sections based on vacancy and requirement. Common sections where new EO/AO and APFC officers are posted include:
- Accounts and Claims
- Compliance and Enforcement
- Legal
- Recovery
- Exemption
- Pension
- Cash and Receipts
- Audit
- Administration and Coordination
- Citizen Services and Grievance
- Intelligence
Over time, officers rotate across departments through transfers and internal movement. No single section is permanent, and most officers will work in multiple sections over a career.
How Is EPFO Training Different from Other Government Jobs?
This is a common question, especially for candidates who are simultaneously preparing for Civil Services or other Group A posts.
| EPFO EO/AO & APFC Training Comparison with Civil Services | |||
| Parameter | EPFO EO/AO | EPFO APFC | Civil Services |
| Training Centre | PDUNASS, Janakpuri, Delhi | PDUNASS, Janakpuri, Delhi | LBSNAA, Mussoorie |

Can You Prepare for CSE or Other Exams During EPFO Training?
Practically, not during the classroom phase at PDUNASS. The training schedule fills the day. Sessions run through working hours. Evenings are free, but not long enough to sustain a parallel preparation at that intensity.
Candidates who genuinely want to pursue UPSC CSE alongside the job typically wait until the OJT phase or, more realistically, until training is over and they have settled into their posting.
Some officers do manage it with very disciplined time management, but it requires serious commitment.
Trying to prepare for another exam during the 3-month PDUNASS residential phase is not realistic. Give that phase your full attention. It will pay off when the probationary exam comes around.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid During EPFO Training?
1. Do not treat the OJT journal as a formality
Officers who document real observations build a much better understanding of how departments connect. More importantly, it is assessed.
2. Do not skip the legal training phase mentally
A large part of an EPFO officer’s work involves quasi-judicial proceedings, tribunal appearances, and penal action. What you learn at NLU is directly applicable. Pay attention.
3. Do not arrive with a fixed department preference
Every section in EPFO has interesting work. Claims involve direct member service at scale. Compliance involves field enforcement and inspection. Legal involves a tribunal strategy. Going in with an open mind leads to better early learning.
4. Build relationships with your batch
EPFO is a service where your batch will cross paths with you repeatedly, at different ROs, in different zones, at different career stages. Take that seriously from the start.
5. Take the probationary exam seriously
Many officers treat it as routine. It is not. Failing means extended probation. Prepare for it the way you prepared for the UPSC EPFO RT, with seriousness and a plan.
6. Do not try to hold multiple things in parallel during the PDUNASS phase
You just cleared one of the tougher central government selection processes. Give training your complete focus for those initial months.
